We’re not sure if you’ve noticed or not, but flat design has seriously been taking over the Internet. It’s literally everywhere. You probably see it all the time and don’t even realize it. It’s used in online ads like the Google Fi ad above, and it’s been represented by numerous designers and graphic illustrators for quite some time now. Let’s break down what flat design is and why it’s so popular right now. Also referred to as Corporate Memphis, flat design is basically a minimalistic design style. It’s a two dimensional style, recognized by its bright colors and simple shape composition. Unlike earlier design trends that focused on making designs look as realistic and three dimensional as possible, flat design focuses on the use of “flat”, two dimensional designs and illustrations to deliver information as quickly as possible.
If you’ve got your phone or your computer by you (we know you do), the apps on your phone screen are a great example of flat design. Flat design can also be found in the graphical user interface of mobile apps and websites. The navigation icons on your favorite websites are more than likely flat design too. They may resemble a real life object (such as a folder or a camera) but they lack the realistic details and instead are simple shapes that convey and communicate an idea to the user.
Obviously, if you have a website, you want it to be attractive, easy to navigate, and highly responsive. You achieve all of that when going with a flat design style. It’s used frequently because the simple designs are much less stressful on backend servers than more realistic, highly detailed designs. This allows websites and apps to be more responsive, load much faster, and look good on both large and small screens. With flat design, websites become much more functional, have a clean look, and have a sense of order to them.
Flat design works because it invokes cleanliness and simplicity which can increase user engagement . It is easy to create, easy to implement, and promotes visual harmony. It’s the very essence of the phrase K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple, Silly!)
