After months of dreaming and wishing upon several stars, I FINALLY own an iPad Pro and an Apple Pencil! As a digital artist, the main reason I wanted this coveted tablet was to finally be able to try out the Procreate app. Before purchasing, I watched countless videos on YouTube of other artists drawing with the app and I instantly fell in love with it. Everything about it from the user interface to the built in time-lapse had me going crazy.
Now having used the app for over a month, I can honestly say that Procreate has easily become my go-to art creation tool for the majority of my digital projects. Here’s why I love the Procreate app so much and how it exceeded my expectations.
SIMPLIFIED USER INTERFACE
I was pretty pumped when I purchased Adobe CS5 back in 2011. However, after installing Photoshop to my PC and booting it up, I quickly remembered that I had no idea how to use it. All the menus and toolbars had me slightly intimidated and there
was definitely a learning curve that came with using it. Adobe Illustrator had me even more spooked. How was I gonna make art when I couldn’t even figure out the menus?? A lot of people new to digital art react the same way to Photoshop the first time they open it, and this is seriously where Procreate just excels. Right out of the gate you’re met with one of the most minimalistic user interfaces I’ve ever seen. After watching a few videos, I knew how to navigate and use Procreate before I even owned an iPad. If you’re worried about how long it will take you to learn how to do anything in Procreate, I’m here to tell you to worry no more! SPEEDY WORKFLOW Navigating around Procreate is a joy and super simple. Your basic tools are always a touch away and after using them once, it’s very easy to remember where they live as they’re not buried within numerous menus. This speeds up my workflow and allows me to truly take control of how I create artwork like my flat designs or the coloring book pages I’m currently doing. For example, drawing a shape, filling it with a color, selecting this shape and resizing it takes literal seconds. No need for keyboard shortcuts. All you need is the Apple Pencil or at the very least, your pointer finger. FAMILIAR AND POWERFUL DIGITAL ART TOOLS
If you’re used to using Photoshop, you’ll be happy to know that many of the same tools live inside Procreate but with a twist. For example, should you make a mistake, the Undo tool is as easy as tapping the screen with two fingers. Made a lot of strokes and need to erase the last 50 things? Just tap and hold your two fingers on the screen and watch as everything disappears. Pinching the screen allows you to zoom in and out, but also allows you to rotate your canvas. These are all tools that drastically speed up your workflow and allow you to do less hunting for tools and more creating. EASILY SHARE YOUR WORK
Once I’m done with my creation, sharing it with the world is easy. You can do it right inside of the app. Share to all your favorite social media sites in a variety of formats. It even allows me to save as a Photoshop Document (PSD), so if I want to start a project in Procreate and then finish it up in Photoshop, I totally can. I will definitely be experimenting with how to utilize both Procreate and Adobe Illustrator in future projects.
I could go on and on about how Procreate has changed the way I create art, but then this blog would be a novel. If you’re a digital artist or you want to get into digital art, Procreate is the way to go. Currently, it’s on sale in the Apple Store for $9.99 and worth every penny. This is seriously one of the most powerful yet user friendly tools I’ve ever used and I can’t wait to see what kind of art I can produce with it.
